I took my Dad on a trip this summer -- hit 4 west coast hotels in 7 days. At three occasions, awful upgrades were offered. It alwys happens with a late at night arrival. The clerks' have already tried to pawn the rooms off earlier guests, without success. When they disappear into the backroom and you know you're in for it. Oh the glamour of travel!

Whether you're an executive, and engineer, or just somebody travelling for work or pleasure, no one likes staying in a dumpy hotel. As a life-long resident of the Philadelphia area, I am frequently asked by out-of-towners where they should stay. I don't want to tell them to stay in what seems to a dump.

Please tell me the name of the hotel so that I don't make this mistake.

I agree that you should name the hotel; they deserve to have their name known so we can avoid them.

I used to think that restaurants tried to have me sit near the restrooms and/or kitchen because I'm a woman. I've now decided that it's just that they keep putting people there until they get someone who doesn't know what a lousy table it is, doesn't care, or doesn't have the courage to ask for a better location.

Delicious! Hard to believe how persistently Hotel Hells abound at every price point in the world.

But I vote 'yay' for the Four Seasons in BH. Thanks to working for a crazy boss, I have had stayed at posh joints in a couple of dozen cities in a half-dozen countries. Not a one of them beats that place for attentive care. My own mother could not out-thoughtful those folks.

You have confirmed my theory. Based on years of travel, and no matter how bad my day is going, I have concluded that if I can just get to the Four Seasons, that everything will be all right!

I once arrived late at a hotel and received a room that consisted of a Murphy bed installed on the wall of an entire ball room. Lots of floor space. Could have held a dance. And the manager could not possibly imagine why I might have been less than thrilled.

You should name the bad hotel. If businesses are not held accountable for their bad service, the whole shebang starts sliding toward Banana Republic status. Plus, I want to make sure I do not stay there next time I'm in Pilly.

I had a similar scenario, a few years back, in a hotel where I was also supposedly a VIP (a large, prideful chain). This was a hotel in which I stayed on a monthly basis. They put me up in a small meeting room...with a cot!

Would that hotel from hell happen to be the Crowne Plaza at 1800 Market Street? It sure sounds like it.

I wonder how much the "warm chocolate chip cookie" gambit has done to improve Doubletree's lot. (They are good cookies, damn them.)
